Successful Inspiration4 mission celebrates multiple “firsts”

Following three days spent orbiting the Earth, the four civilians aboard Inspiration4 splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The mission launched on Wednesday from the Launch Complex 39A at the NASA Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This was the first all civilian crewed mission to orbit. The crew was:

  • Jared Isaacman – Founder and chief executive officer at Shift4 Payments. Served as mission commander.
  • Hayley Arceneaux – physician assistant at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Served as chief medical officer.
  • Chris Sembroski – a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital supporter. Served as mission specialist
  • Dr Sian Proctor – Entrepreneur who makes use of Shift4Shop. Served as the mission pilot.

During their trip the crew checked in to show off what it was doing during it’s three day journey.

An all civilian crew isn’t the only “first” that Inspiration4 racked up during its three day journey.

According to SpaceX, Inspiration4 has achieved:

  • First black female spacecraft pilot
  • Youngest American in space
  • First person to fly to space with a prosthetic
  • Farthest flight for a human spaceflight since the Hubble missions
  • First time SpaceX has operated three Dragons in space
  • First free-flight of a Dragon spacecraft on a human spaceflight mission
  • Largest contiguous window ever flown in space
  • First splashdown of a Dragon crew in the Atlantic Ocean
  • First thrice-flown Falcon 9 booster to launch a human spaceflight mission

The mission has also raised $154 million for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with fundraising efforts continuing now following the mission’s splashdown.
