The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Concept EQG is… something

Over the weekend Mercedes-Benz decided to showcase some of the electric vehicles it is currently working on as part of the German IAA motor show. One EV in particular grabbed our attention – the Concept EQG.

As you can likely tell by the general lines, this vehicle is based on the iconic G-Class 4×4, which has graduated from off roading in recent years to being a luxury vehicle designed to mount curbs in modern cities.

As such, it seems like Mercedes-Benz is leaning into this pivot for the G-Class and revealed a 4×4 that looks heavily inspired by Tron, if the lighting is anything to go by.

“With the Concept EQG, Mercedes-Benz presents the near-production study of an all-electric model variant of its utilitarian off-road icon. Visually, the concept car combines the unmistakably striking look of the G-Class with selected design elements typical of all-electric models from Mercedes as contrasting highlights,” the carmaker explained in a press statement.

“The 4×4 qualities of the ‘G’, which have always set the highest standard, will not only find their way into the age of electric mobility, but will be developed even further in some areas. The Concept EQG thus offers a promising preview of what a Mercedes-Benz G-Class with battery-electric drive will be capable of,” it added.

While the overall design has us sitting on the fence, what is pleasing to see is this German carmaker sticking to its guns in terms of electrifying its fleet.

For now the Concept EQG is precisely that, as there is no word on when it would go into production a fully fledged vehicle. If to does though, Mercedes-Benz would make it one of zero-mission and technology-laiden cars of the future.

“With this strategic step from ‘Electric first’ to ‘Electric only’, including sustainable production and the CO2-neutral life cycle of our batteries, we are accelerating the transformation to a zero-emission and software-driven future,” the company explains.

“We want to inspire our customers to switch to electric mobility with convincing products. An icon like the G-Class fulfils this task perfectly,” it concludes.
