Updated Surface Duo 2 retains dual screen and touts multitasking

Last night’s Microsoft Event run a fairly wide gamut in terms of new hardware designed with Windows 11 in mind. A number of 2-in-1 devices and accessories saw the light of day, but the most interesting unveiling was probably the Surface Duo 2.

When Microsoft chose to pull the plug on Windows 10X earlier in the year, the fate of the company’s next-gen devices was up in the air. As it turns out though, Microsoft is sticking with mobile devices focused on multitasking.

“Designed to showcase the power of Microsoft 365 in your pocket, Surface Duo brings dual-screen productivity and entertainment with you wherever you go. When Surface Duo launched last year, we pushed the boundaries of what a mobile device could be,” noted a Windows Blog post.

“With Surface Duo 2, we’re pushing that vision even further while offering the core capabilities people expect from a modern premium smartphone,” it added.

In order to deliver the smartphone experience, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 5G processor is present, a trio of lenses on the rear (16MP ultra-wide, 12MP wide-angle and 12MP telephoto) and a pair of PixelSense displays that measure 8.3″ when unfolded.

Crucially though, Microsoft has not tried to do what Samsung and Huawei have done, with a physical gap between the displays as it looks to frame the device as being ideal for running two applications or performing two separate tasks at once.

As we have seen with those competitor efforts, it will be software that truly delivers a great experience, rather than the hardware and clever engineering. This is where Microsoft hopes Windows 11 will make an impact.

“Surface Duo 2 is much more than a phone. From the integration with Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, to entertainment scenarios like TikTok, Kindle and gaming, Duo 2 enables countless app pairings and unmatched multitasking capabilities. Use any two Android apps simultaneously and check out new app experiences tuned for dual screen, like Gameloft’s Asphalt 9: Legends,” it highlights.

It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will make the Surface Duo 2 available in South Africa, especially given the rocky past of its smartphone offerings, but in the US the new multitasking device is already up for pre-order and starts at $1 499.99 (~R22 005).
