A Part Two for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune is now official

Those who have already watched Dune may have been surprised when the opening credits added “Part One” under the title of the movie as a sequel was not officially in the works, until now.

Production company on Dune 2021, Legendary Pictures, has confirmed the sequel on Twitter with another title card, this time with “Part Two” trailing the series name.

We’ve also received a similar email from the local representation of the movies which falls short of being a press release as it doesn’t provide any more information than this tweet.

Thankfully Deadline, which is known for its exclusive announcements in the movie scene, does have more information for us.

The publication reports the return of Denis Villeneuve as director, co-writer and producer. While the cast is not mentioned several members of it such as Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya and Dave Bautista have retweeted the announcement.

As we discussed in our review Dune really struggles under the weight of being a single movie that is designed to set up a sequel. We wouldn’t go so far as to say that the movie becomes retroactively better with a second movie now confirmed, but it does at least mean fans will get some kind of closure in the future.

And that future is 20th October 2023. While we’ve become weary of constantly shifting dates under the pandemic, Deadline adds that this is the theatrical release of the movie. With Dune fans both new and old used to waiting this doesn’t seem like too much of a gap between the movies.

Dune: Part One, which we suppose is a more fitting name now, is out in most parts of the world in cinemas and / or on HBO Max. In South Africa where HBO Max is not available, the theatre experience is the only way to watch the movie legally right now.
