AMD has issued chipset updates to address Windows 11 slow downs

The launch of Windows 11 for those using AMD systems was a rather rocky one with the chipmaker warning that Ryzen systems might experience slower apps.

The slow down could reportedly increase L3 cache latency up to three times and apps that make use of more than one CPU thread would exhibit reduced performance.

The good news is that AMD and Microsoft have issued updates that address the slow downs on Ryzen systems.

As relates to the L3 cache latency issue, Microsoft has released a software update for Windows 11. The details about the update – KB5006746 – as well as how to download it without having to wait for Windows Update can be found here.

As for the app slow downs, this can be resolved by downloading the latest AMD Chipset Driver package available here. Once downloaded and installed, the AMD Chipset Software in the Apps & Features interface in Windows 11 should have the software version 3.10.08.506 or newer.

With these updates we’re hopeful that the Windows 11 user experience is marginally better and that everything works as it did with Windows 10.

We’re glad to see that these bugs were fixed so quickly but perhaps Windows 11 could’ve used more time in the oven before official release. The ability to install Android apps for instance – a feature Microsoft bragged about a lot during its launch announcement – only just became available for Windows Insiders in the Beta channel.

The launch of Windows 11 has been a rough one but it appears as if we’ve finally reached a point of stability for all systems. At least we hope so.
