Food delivery platforms Mr D and Uber Eats have thrived during the pandemic, so it only makes sense that ridesharing platform Bolt wants to get in on the action. Having piloted Bolt Food in Cape Town, now the offering is available to those who live in Johannesburg.

The platform notes that over 300 different restaurants will accessible in Johannesburg at launch, with more joining every day. Since launch in April 2020 in the City Bowl for example, 800 restaurants were added to the app.

“We piloted Bolt Food in Cape Town last year, with outstanding results,” notes James Townsend-Rose, country manager for Bolt Food in South Africa.

“Restaurants and their customers welcomed Bolt Food’s affordable prices and quick deliveries, and we are excited to bring this solution to Johannesburg, and to other South African cities in the coming months,” he adds.

For now, a number of fast food outlets have been added to the app, such as Burger King, Pizza Hut, Subway, Andiccio’s and Del Forno, but hopefully in the coming months, the company will prioritise smaller establishments and businesses, many of whom have moved to apps in order to continue to operate during the pandemic.

In order to get customers using its app, Bolt Food has a few incentives, which include no food delivery fees on orders where the distance between the food outlet and the delivery destination is less than 4.5 kilometres. Added to this will discounts of up to 50 percent from selected restaurants during this initial launch period in Johannesburg.

It’s also worth noting that Absa customers can get up to 30 percent cashback on their Bolt Food orders paid for with qualifying cards.

The mobile app is available to download on the Play Store for Android, App Store for iOS and AppGallery for HMS devices.
