DBE to host pledge for ‘clean’ Matric exams

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has announced a “Pledge Signing Ceremony” ahead of the 2021 Matric exams which are taking place in less than a week.

The ceremony will be overseen by Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga and Deputy Minister of Basic Education Reginah Mhaule across two provinces: the Free State and the Northern Cape.

Motshekga will oversee a ceremony at Tiisetsang Secondary School, Bethlehem while Mhaule will oversee one at the Thabo Moorosi Multi-Purpose Centre, Mothibistad.

The purpose of the joint events is a bit vague based on the announcement from the DBE (see the embed at the bottom of this story), but a bit more information is provided by
Elijah Mhlanga, Chief Director: Communications & Media: Department of Basic Education.

“Pledge signing taking place tomorrow as part of the commitment to a clean NSC Examinations,” Mhlanga writes.

The prospect of unfair exams and cheating come up every year when the exams kick off so it seems this pledge will be in opposition to these problems to try and instil some confidence in students, their parents and educators.

“There are seven hundred and thirty-five thousand, six hundred and seventy-seven (735 677) full-time candidates sitting for the 2021 NSC Exams, an increase by one hundred and twenty-eight thousand, four hundred and fifty-one (128 451). This is the third Matric exam to happen under the COVID-19 environment; and the DBE had to make changes, mitigate the negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic on teaching and learning,” the DBE writes in the announcement.

Writing exams under pandemic conditions is an already unfair situation so it will be interesting to see what the department has to say about the third go around tomorrow.
