Department countdown to Matric exams now at two weeks

As it has done in past years the Department of Basic Education has initiated a countdown to the Matric exams with the clock today getting closer to the two week mark.

At the time of writing there’s 14 days and 10 hours left until the exams kick off on 27th October. If you’re reading this story later on the day of publication that time will be even closer to 14 days even.

The timer is affixed to the top of the education.gov.za website here.

Aside from slowly ticking down to the exams the department did share some extra details about this year’s proceedings recently.

Angie Motshekga, Minister of Basic Education, gave a presentation after the 2021 National Teaching Awards.

“This is the third Matric exam to happens under the COVID-19 environment; and the DBE had to make changes, to mitigate the negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic on teaching and learning. This year, there are seven hundred and thirty-five thousand, six hundred and seventy-seven (735 677) full-time candidates. This is an increase by one hundred and twenty-eight thousand, four hundred and fifty-one (128 451),” Motshekga said.

The Department of Basic Education usually shares its endeavours towards making schools ready for exams under the pandemic. Just today, for example, UNICEF reported on a handwashing station at a local school (see the Tweet embed below) which is the newest of 24 across 17 schools in association with Woolworths.

Hopefully these extra measures on top of vaccines availability to all over the age of 18 will lead to a safer examination season for the students of South Africa.

“In conclusion, I wish to urge all South Africans to play a direct role in rebooting the Basic Education system. On a daily basis, we are seeing improvements in the rates of COVID-19 related infections and deaths. Levels of normalcy are gradually being reached; but we must still remain vigilant in whatever we do. Adherence to COVID19 protocols is not negotiable,” Motshekga adds.
