Department of Basic Education shares exam prep tips

With the countdown to the 2021 Matric exams now passed the two week mark, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has shared its exam preparation tips for students, their parents and teachers.

The full “tips for exam preparations” page is available on the DBE website here and is broken down into four sections:

  • Top 10 study tips
  • Study skills to boost your learning
  • One the day of the exam
  • Question words to help you answer questions

We obviously recommend that these are read through in detail but we had a read ourselves to check out the quality of the information.

Most of the information is what you’d expect not just for doing well in exams but being a healthy human being such as staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet and sleeping for eight hours per day.

It’s still important that these topics are discussed again now as it’s easy to fall into unhealthy habits due to the stress of the exams.

The rest of the advice on the page is generally solid but we would have loved to see some extra information that is more focused on the exams themselves, such as rules for going to the toilet or having water, with students. This information is spread across the DBE site so having it all collected in one place would have been handy.

The most effective tip we found was the allusion to working in groups. While the ongoing pandemic can make meeting up for physical study groups difficult, this kind of learning can be very effective.

“Teach your concepts to anyone who will listen. It might feel strange at first, but it is definitely worth reading your revision notes aloud,” the DBE writes.

The 2021 Matric exams begin on 27th October and continue until 6th December.
