Has the power among podcast platforms shifted? Spotify thinks so

Earlier this week Spotify released its 2021 third quarter earnings. If you were an investor in the company, it would make for great reading, particularly as Spotify crowned itself as the world’s number one audio network.

This as its monthly active users has increases 19 percent year-on-year to 381 million. Added to this is subscribers growing by the exact same percentage to 172 million. As such, the company’s push into more territories earlier in the year appears to be reaping the desired results.

One other statistic was rather interesting too, with Spotify stating that it’s the number one podcast platform in the United States.

To back up the claim, Spotify cites Edison Research and its own internal data, but failed to breakdown specifics in terms of its current listener count in the region, which is arguably the largest podcast market both in terms of creators and listeners in the world.

If the claim is true, it would be quite the feat, especially as the streaming platform has only been on a podcast push over the past few years, unlike Apple, which has dominated the space for quite some time now.

As such, the tide could be turning in terms of which player is leading the worldwide podcasting landscape.

Based on some of the numbers that were mentioned during the previous quarter by CEO Daniel Ek, it is an area where Spotify shows no signs of slowing down.

“We started our journey three years ago in podcasting with a catalog of about 185,000 podcasts. And we were really nowhere, compared to the largest players in the industry. Today, we have 3.2 million podcasts on the platform, a growth rate of over 1,500%,” noted Ek earlier in the year.

Add to this other live audio services like Greenroom, which is specifically aimed at rivalling Clubhouse in that space, and Spotify could soon overtake that wildly popular service, given its relatively quick growth as far as podcasts are concerned.
