Infinite is ‘the most wide open and adventure-filled Halo experience yet’

Much of the focus of Halo Infinite lately has been on the multiplayer but we now have a better look at the singleplayer campaign thanks to a new trailer.

The unimaginatively-named “Campaign Overview” calls Infinite “the most wide open and adventure-filled Halo experience yet” and features various snippets of Master Chief galivanting around Zeta Halo and wrecking house.

“The Banished have defeated UNSC forces and taken control of the mysterious Zeta Halo, threatening the survival of humankind. When all hope is lost and humanity’s fate hangs in the balance, the Master Chief returns to confront the most ruthless foe he’s ever faced,” reads the description.

The grappling hook, again, gets a lot of screen time here especially as a way to quickly get explosives from the environment and promptly chuck them at enemies. It’s actually a bit comical how many times this happens in the trailer. If you were dreading another FPS where you simply shoot glowing red barrels you’re in for a treat here… because the barrels are now futuristic blue energy cubes that you can mess around with thanks to the grappling hook.

We do get to see some other tools players will have access to and there’s a short shot at the upgrades page. Grappleshot, Shield Core, Threat Sensor, Drop Wall and Thruster are shown off as tools which can be upgraded. We also see Master Chief go invisible for a period to sneak up an enemy and kill them with a Gravity Hammer.

Gameplay looks good here but we’re getting some strong generic open world shooter vibes from this trailer. Master Chief roams around, frees some prisoners in a non-mission event and tackles an enemy outpost. This is all has a distinctive Halo feel to it but we can’t help but see similarities to many other titles, but maybe we’re just exhausted by open world game tropes.

Halo Infinite launches on 8th December for Xbox consoles, PC and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It’s a day one inclusion for Xbox Game Pass too so subscribers can play without spending anything extra.
