POCO is the new name in South African Android phones

In early 2020 the POCO brand was spun off from Xiaomi – an already trusted name in the smart devices game – to become its own beast and now in late 2021 South Africans can benefit from the hard work that the company has put in to create great smartphones for the best prices.

The pinnacle of this is the POCO M3, a phone that has the tagline “more than you expect” which is exactly what it delivers in every box as this device changes what you’d expect from a smartphone maker and what it will cost you to buy.

But let’s start with what everyone wants to discuss when to comes to phones: the front and the back, or the screen and the camera respectively.

The M3 has a 6.53 inch screen in a resolution POCO calls FHD+. This is because the resolution is actually higher than the usual 1920 X 1080, which is what many call Full High Definition (FHD). Instead the M3 offers a crisper 2340 X 1080 resolution.

This screen size in such a slim chassis means that the M3 offers a crazy 90.34 percent screen-to-body ratio. This is thanks to the selfie camera and, yes we did promise to talk about it when we got to the back, but this one is worth some discussion too.

The selfie camera is hidden inside of a small “Dot Drop” in the centre top of the screen. This gives you the power of aa 8MP camera without a huge, unsightly notch. The Dot Drop is the perfect mix of more screen and more camera on the front.

Flip the M3 over and you won’t find just one or two cameras, but instead an impressive triple camera array accented in a black space on the back of the device.

The main camera is a 48MP behemoth backed up by a 2MP depth sensor and a 2MP macro camera. This array, combined with the flash, gives you photography tools to go up against just about anything.

The software for the camera has several modes to match your subject matter and the environment, such as a dedicated mode for capturing documents or another dedicated mode for night scenes. AI scene detection can set this for you to take the guesswork out of things and, for those you prefer video, look forward to slow motion 120FPS capture here.

Powering all of this is a 6 000mAh battery which is, again, way above what you’d expect at the POCO M3 price range.

What can you do with all that juice? POCO claims that you can squeeze out 17 hours of video, 196 hours of movies or 583 hours of standby time. While your exact usage will change the longevity of the battery, those are still impressive feats that let the M3 trade blows even with the higher end devices on the market.

All of this isn’t even mentioning some great bonus features and functionality which the market has convinced the public are not to be expected for this price. A side-mounted fingerprint scanner, expandable storage, a speedy Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 processor and more is packed into a phone that weighs in at just 198 grams.
