Rocksmith is being removed from stores this weekend

Rocksmith, the unique rhythm teaching game that requires plugging an actual guitar into your PC or console, will be delisted from online storefronts this weekend.

This is to make way for the upcoming new version of the game Rocksmith+. Publishers unfortunately have a long history of removing older versions of games to encourage people to buy the new updates, which is exactly what happened to a trio of Grand Theft Auto games this week.

That being said, because Rocksmith is so focused on music, the removal may also be due to licencing as the game has now been out for a decade. Licence agreements ending is what recently forced Forza Motorsport 7 to be taken off of stores just last month.

“While we’re excited to offer more information about Rocksmith+ in the future, we want to take some time to discuss news for the original Rocksmith. One of the unique aspects of the Rocksmith method has been the ability to learn and play along to official master recordings of your favorite songs. But as of October 17, 2021, Rocksmith (2011) will no longer be available for purchase on any digital storefronts. Shortly thereafter, Rocksmith (2011) DLC will begin to be removed as well,” an announcement reads.

A separate post on the Ubisoft forums states that the following DLC songs including any bundles which contain them will be delisted in November:

  • Lynyrd Skynyrd – Free Bird
  • Radiohead – Bodysnatchers
  • The Black Keys – Tighten Up
  • Boston – More Than a Feeling
  • Deep Purple – Smoke on the Water
  • The Allman Brothers Band – Jessica
  • T. Rex – 20th Century Boy
  • Three Days Grace – I Hate Everything About You
  • Vampire Weekend – Cousins

The good news here is that, like many other store delisting events, owners of any software purchased beforehand will retain access to their content.

For those who do not own the game and wanted to pick it up, they will now need to do so soon and at full price. On PC at least this removal comes at a bad time as the Halloween Sale is happening soon and would have been a great opportunity to buy the game and its many DLC songs for less.

Finally it should be noted that all of the above applies to the original 2011 version of the game. The 2014 remaster should remain untouched for now.
