See how the satisfying combat of Sifu was made

While it’s common to see motion capture and expert advisors on massive AAA games with budgets shaming some small countries, it’s rarer to see in the smaller game space. Upcoming fighting indie title Sifu has shown off how it has used these elements to create its melee combat.

If you’re not familiar with Sifu you may have seen Absolver in the past, a previous game from the studio that was published by Devolver Digital. Sloclap is developing and self-publishing this time around, but the focus on hard-hitting, close quarters combat remains in this new game.

Videos and gifs of Sifu in action have been popular online and now Sloclap has given us some insight into how it was done.

“Take a peek into Sifu’s development and our team’s collaboration with Benjamin Colussi, Kung Fu master and founder of the Lao Wei San – Pak Mei School in Paris. Combat design workshops, motion-capture sessions, cultural authenticity reviews: we want in Sifu to blend both expertise and creativity to offer an explosive and unique Kung Fu experience,” reads the description of this video.

As Colussi explains he was trained in China. Sloclap is a French developer so having that local expertise must have helped things here.

From the video, embedded below, we can see that Colussi and other performers act out the fights in motion capture gear which serves as a basis for the animators and programmers to implement in the game.

While the focus here is on hand to hand combat there’s also some weaponry involved with a staff, machete and baseball bat mentioned.

There’s also mention of around 160 moves for the player character to use. This is again an impressive array of movement for a smaller game and it’s interesting to see how it plays out including some environment-sensitive animations such as a brutal finishing move where the player slams an enemy into a bar.

Sifu is scheduled for release on PC, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on 22nd February 2022.
