TikTok is dabbling in NFTs now, with owned moments

Ask anyone about NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and the answers run a fairly wide gamut from NF-what?, to the next big thing, to digital snake oil. Regardless of what your thoughts on NFTs are, their popularity clearly has not died out yet as TikTok is looking to get in on the action too.

This as the short format video platform has now launched a drop site where people can “own” moments from top TikTok creators.

“Inspired by the creativity and innovation of the TikTok creator community, TikTok is exploring the world of NFTs as a new creator empowerment tool. NFTs are a new way for creators to be recognized and rewarded for their content and for fans to own culturally-significant moments on TikTok,” reads a press statement on the new announcement.

“The creation that happens on TikTok helps drive culture and start trends that impact society. TikTok will bring something unique and groundbreaking to the NFT landscape by curating some of these cultural milestones and pairing them with prominent NFT artists,” it adds.

While there is quite a lot of verbose language in the above statement, it looks like this bandwagon launch does have the weight of some popular creators behind it, with the likes of Lil Nas X, Grimes, Bella Poarch and others featuring on the landing page of the aforementioned drop site.

With every platform seemingly trying to get in on the NFT wave, it will be interesting to see whether TikTok’s approach yields anything significant.

We should see what materialises next week, with the first drop arriving via Lil Nas X on 6th October, followed by others throughout the rest of the month.
