Unisa ‘final regional visits’ hope to sort out thousands of uncollected certificates

Recently the University of South Africa (Unisa) revealed that more than 60 000 certificates were uncollected from the past few years, a problem that was exasperated by the pandemic. Now the university is going on a spree of visits to its regional offices to help the situation.

“The University of South Africa (Unisa)’s Graduations Division will embark on a final round of visits to the Unisa regional offices from 22 October till 06 November 2021 to finalise the collection of outstanding certificates by students who have completed their qualifications,” reads a media release.

“Unisa urges all students to collect their certificates from their respective regional offices once they have received an SMS from the university indicating the specific date and place of collection. Students are also advised to wait for the SMS message before visiting their designated regional office to collect their certificates.”

Those who were supposed to receive any kind of certificate during the Spring 2021 period can look forward to collecting them later this year.

In our original coverage we pointed to some problems that would have caused so many students to not receive or collect their certificates. The poor communication from the university, tuition payments and a host of problems caused by the pandemic are the likely causes.

On the topic of communication problems with the university we would like to point students to this recent post from the Unisa Department of Communication Sciences.

In this post the department points out that students can direct message Unisa through Twitter and Facebook. This is important as the university usually recommend emailing or calling but both methods have proven to be less than successful in the past.

This is especially important if students want to find out some extra information before physically going to a Unisa campus.

“For the collection of certificates in Pretoria, the Unisa Muckleneuck Campus is open for collection on weekdays from 09:00 to 15:00. Certificates can be collected from the OR Tambo Building on the campus,” the media release continues.

“Students who do not receive an SMS notifying them of the date and venue to collect their certificates are urged to contact the university to ascertain if their contact details are captured correctly on the system and to make the necessary arrangements to collect their certificates. Student should send their enquiries to gaudeamus@unisa.ac.za.”
