Unisa shares ‘essential tips’ for examinations

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has shared a massive amount of information for students writing exams online that should really be read through in detail.

The landing page for the “essential tips for online examinations” can be found here where it breaks into multiple sections including:

  • Student guide: Take-home / portfolio exam
  • Student guide: Randomised MCQ or paragraph examination
  • Invigilation
  • Examination rules
  • How to prepare for the online examinations
  • Online assessment skills for students
  • Additional technical resources
  • Rules around plagiarism and cheating
  • Contact information
  • Additional tips

Its been a bumpy ride for Unisa during the pandemic. While the university is a distance learning institution its exams were traditionally still done in person with students needing to travel to examination centres to sit and write in person.

This changed last year when Unisa had to move online in a hurry to allow students to write exams while also keeping them safe. This first batch of exams were rocky and plagued with issues, but soon became a permanent fixture which has continued.

A teething issue with this new type of exam was a lack of documentation and general information available to students which makes these essential tips all the more welcome.

We have to hand it to Unisa this time around as the details provided are quite extensive and walk through many of the online exam processes step by step which goes a long way to helping with anxiety around this time.

On top of the written guides there’s also a good amount of video content all hosted on YouTube which allows for easier watching on an established platform instead of some more problematic Unisa-hosted video contented which the university has tried in the past.

We highly recommend all students thoroughly read through everything on this page and watch the videos too, especially if this is the first batch of online exams they are writing.
