Wits points students to funding from Netflix, Huawei

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) has directed students to two separate funding opportunities from Netflix and Huawei on Twitter.

The bursary from Huawei is closer to its deadline with applications required to be in before the closing date of 20th October 2021.

“Huawei is offering financial assistance to a certain number of students who are interested in the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) sector. The company has partnered up with the local universities in South Africa and offering Huawei bursaries. These are meant for students in their second, third, or final year of Honours or Masters degree,” reads the details page.

Said details page can be found here where prospective students should pay attention to the criteria. The bursaries from this programme for 2022 will only cover a select amount of degrees which are information technology as well as various engineering disciplines (mechanical, computer, industrial and electric / electronic).

Aside from covering students expenses such as tuition and accommodation, the bursary also offers a stipend.

As for Netflix its Postgraduate Scholarship Programme closes on 31st October 2021.

The application page for the programme can be found here hosted on the Tshikululu social investment fund site. Tshikululu is a partner with Netflix for this initiative.

“In early 2021, Netflix announced their commitment in supporting Black representation in the Film & TV industry to the creative ecosystem in South Africa. Specifically, the company has committed to funding full post-graduate scholarships at higher educational institutions in South Africa to support the formal qualification and training of aspiring Black creatives in the film and TV disciplines,” the application page reads.

As with the Huawei bursary there are certain criteria which must be met for a successful application. There is no definitive list of what qualifications are covered for funding but they must be “one-year postgraduate studies in Film, Television and/or audio-visual related qualification[s]”.

There is also a smaller pool of schools that are covered under this programme which are:

  • University of Cape Town
  • University of the Witwatersrand
  • University of Johannesburg
  • University of Pretoria
  • Durban University of Technology
  • Tshwane University of Technology
  • AFDA
  • Boston Media House
  • AACA Film and Acting School
  • CityVarsity

Despite Wits directing students to both of these funding operations students can use them to study elsewhere.
