Honor 50 launching in SA tomorrow for R13 999

Tomorrow is when Black Friday “officially” kicks off and to mark its return to South Africa, Honor is bringing a new flagship phone into the country in the form of the Honor 50.

Earlier this year we reported on what the company’s plans were after its split from Huawei, with the Honor 50 earmarked as the first device to land locally. Tomorrow that comes to fruition, but there is a caveat.

This as the Honor 50 will only be available via Takealot as of 26th November, with other retailers and networks like MTN, Cell C and Telkom Mobile selling the phone in early December.

No precise date is mentioned for next month, but when the Honor 50 is listed with retailers, it will carry a recommended price tag of R13 999.

To sweeten the offer, this device (8GB RAM and 256GB storage) will be bundled with a pair of Honor Earbuds Lite (valued at R1 499), but this will be subject to stock availability and may vary depending on the outlet.

Either way, Honor is looking to make a splash with this device, which it will definitely need to do given the amount of well specced and affordable phones from Chinese vendors that have entered SA this year. As such, it will need to beat out competition like the recently launched Xiaomi 11T Pro, which also retails for R13 999 (RRP).

So what is this phone packing?

Some of the notable specifications include a 6.57″ OLED display, 4 300mAh battery that supports 66W fast charging and an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 5G processor.

Added to this is a rear camera array that Honor says is purpose-built with vlogging in mind thanks to six multi-video shooting modes. As for the hardware powering this, a massive 108MP main lens, 8MP wide-angle, 2MP macro and 2MP depth sensing options are available, with a 32MP selfie camera up front.

Along with the Honor 50, the company is bringing a Lite flavour (8GB RAM and 128GB storage) to SA for R5 499 (RRP).
