Is Battlefield 2042 still worth jumping into?

Battlefield 2042 has been out for a little over a week now and the launch has been nothing short of disastrous to say the least. Players everywhere have been taking to social media and Reddit to voice their concerns about noticeable downgrades that the game has compared to its predecessor from 2018.

So is it still worth jumping into Battlefield 2042?

War-Torn Future

Playing through a couple of matches, we can see why players are upset. The game in its current state is mildly reminiscent of another game *Cough Cyberpunk 2077 Cough* that launched last year. Coincidentally enough, both games are set in the future but Battlefield 2042’s is a more realistic future that’s quite scary.

Battlefield 2042 takes place in a war-torn future version of our planet where countries are fighting over whatever scarce resources are left after climate change ravages mankind. It’s a little too eerie to be honest.

We wish that EA and DICE would have created a single player campaign for this game because the premise is great and it’s such a shame to see it wasted like this.

Moving onto the actual gameplay, Battlefield 2042 takes quite a while to load up. Seeing as there are 128 player battles, it takes a while before players are thrown into matches. You may want to quit out of a matchmaking queue if it’s taking too long to find yourself a game and just re-launch into either Conquest or Breakthrough if this happens.

Once you’re in a battle, things get as chaotic as ever. This is still quite clearly a Battlefield game with the core gameplay of “Spawn, defeat as many opponents as possible, die and repeat” being the order of the day.

Where it falters, however, is with the fact that Battlefield 2042 is so ridiculously watered down compared to Battlefield 5. Not only have EA and DICE downgraded the visual fidelity of the game but the actual gameplay itself is severely lacking.

First and foremost, there’s no general, team or player scoreboard. Players cannot change squads or create their own in game. When you’re assigned a squad, that’s it for the match and there aren’t any squad bonuses either.

The game runs extremely erratic with the frame rate being all over the place. Changing graphics settings from ultra to low or even medium doesn’t really seem to make much of a difference to the FPS count either and we’re putting this down to poor optimisation.

Stay Classy

The class system has been reworked in Battlefield 2042 and players can pick from a handful of characters to play as. Once you’ve settled on a class, you’ll get to grips with their special abilities in no time and find a favourite.

The voice acting of your playable character becomes incredibly annoying over time in-game especially when you’re downed and screaming out for a revive or trying to respawn.

The number of weapons in the game have also been reduced to 22 and many are locked behind high level requirements forcing players to grind through lots of matches to unlock higher tier weapons.

The maps on offer in Battlefield 2042 are limited to seven base maps and six “recycled” and enhanced maps from older Battlefield titles that are accessible via Battlefield Portal from within the game.

Battlefield 2042’s maps suffer from a bit of a design flaw in that they are ridiculously massive because this means that players will spend quite a lot of time traversing the map just to get in on the action.

Being able to spawn into vehicles isn’t always a given seeing as there’s such a high player count now and if you do unluckily spawn far away from the action, you’ll spend a long time running towards the enemy forces.

The iconic destructibility and environmental effects seen in Battlefield games has been watered down in Battlefield 2042. The visual fidelity of the game looks very inconsistent with some map areas looking great whereas others look extremely basic and lacklustre.

There are also numerous bugs and glitches which are plaguing the game and some of them, strangely enough, are ridiculously fun (Yay for gravity defying hovercrafts!).

We’re hoping that a future update ups the damage potential of the Tornado because while it looks great visually, it just feels so disappointing in game when it doesn’t really do much to the environment itself.

With all of that said, there is fun to be had in Battlefield 2042. Having spent quite a few hours playing the game, we enjoyed our time with it, but if you’re asking players to buy this at premium pricing, they’ll be left with a very bad taste in their mouths.

Battlefield 2042 feels like an Early Access game and one that needs another six to 12 months to be optimised and improved upon.

As it stands right now, we cannot recommend picking this game up unless you’re a hardcore fan and are willing to overlook the game’s current state. Thankfully EA and DICE are aware of the negative feedback and have put out an extensive content roadmap. Now we just have to wait and see what happens.
