Love Is in the Air by Banksy to be sold as 10 000 separate NFTs

Last month we covered an announcement where Sotheby’s was set to auction off two pieces of art by Banksy while accepting bids in Ethereum. It was a first for the auction world and now the infamous artist is having another work auctioned off – Love Is in the Air.

Instead of the crypto angle this time, it is NFTs that is the focus here. This as the artwork, which sold for $12.9 million to non-fungible token platform Particle earlier in the year, is set to be sold as 10 000 separate NFTs, each estimated to be sold for around $1 500.

By our napkin math, that equates to $15 million, turning a nice profit for the platform selling it.

The auction is set to happen between 10th and 14th January, with Particle digitally dividing up the artwork into the aforementioned 10 000 pieces, which will measure 100×100 pixels.

“Banksy has turned the art world on its head. Widely regarded as one of the most iconic creators of the 21st century—his daring, humanitarian nature and strong belief that art should be for everyone reflects the mission at Particle, making this masterpiece symbolic to launch the platform with,” notes Particle co-founder, Loïc Gouzer, of the planned auction.

Given that each piece will be assigned randomly, it will be interesting to see what kind of figures this auction will yield, along with what owners will do with their digital piece of a famous artwork.

“Once you are an owner of a Particle it is up to you to do what you please with it,” says  Particle CEO Harold Eytan. “They can do so via a variety of secondary marketplaces, or on Particle’s own marketplace,” he adds.

We must admit that we’re still on the fence when it comes to NFTs, but the fervour surrounding them shows no signs of dying down just yet.
