New Garmin Fenix 7 sports touchscreen, better solar charging and a flashlight

While Apple dominates the more tech-focused and fashionable end of the smartwatch spectrum, Garmin has slowly carved out a place for itself on the fitness side of things with its much loved Fenix series.

The latest in the lineup, the Fenix 7 has officially been unveiled by the company, bringing with it several notable enhancements.

The most significant of these being a new touchscreen up front, that serves the dual purpose of making the Fenix 7 more smartwatch-esque, as well as offering wearers greater use for navigation apps.

Added to this is better solar charging capabilities, doubling the amount of battery life that was first introduced with the Fenix 6 devices. The company has been hard at work on this aspect of its smartwatches, with the Fenix 7X model said to go as long as five weeks via solar charging.

Speaking of the models, there are present here, with a 7S, regular 7 and 7X coming in at 42mm, 47mm and 51mm in size respectively. There are also standard, solar and solar sapphire options within the lineup too, depending on region.

Along with the above improvements, the new range of outdoor smartwatches feature a multi-LED flashlight, as well as a bevy of sensors to track heart rate 24/7, sleep and controls for entertainment apps like Spotify via a connected smartphone.

There’s also the Connect IQ Store accessible on-device for wearers to browse other fitness-focused applications that might pique their interest.

At the time of writing, local pricing and availability have not been confirmed, but Stateside, the Garmin Fenix 7 series starts at a recommended retail price of $699.99 (~R10 795).

As such, the Garmin Fenix 7 series is not going to come cheap when they do eventually land in SA.
