Recent leak points to Galaxy S22 Ultra having less RAM than predecessor

Next month, we don’t know precisely when yet, Samsung plans to unveil its new Galaxy series of devices. As has become the norm is recent years, leaks for the devices are surfacing online, with the latest in particular serving up some interesting specs for the S22 Ultra.

Said leak comes from Roland Quandt, who is usually on the mark when it comes to this sort of thing.

He details seven different devices within the S22 lineup, along with recommended pricing for the European region, also noting that the pandemic, component shortages and general inflation, sees a significant rise in asking price for the flagship phones.

We must of course take all of this with a healthy pinch of salt, but it is the three different flavours of S22 Ultra that intrigues us here, namely as these upcoming variants are sporting less RAM than the predecessor.

To that end there is one 8GB RAM model with 128GB storage and two 12GB RAM devices with 256GB and 512GB storage. With the 8GB RAM model expected to retail for €1 249 (~R21 393), which is the same as the S21 Ultra did, it looks like consumers who pick up the new model are getting less RAM for the same amount of money.

Whether a similar pricing model will be present in SA at the launch of the S22 series remains to be seen, but there will need to be some sort of explanation as to why there is a drop in specifications while the price stays the same.

It is also unclear what the drop in RAM will mean for performance on the Ultra, which is marketed as being the top performing option with the Galaxy S lineups.

This likely won’t draw any ire from consumers, but it is worthwhile finding out Samsung’s thinking here and how the company can justify the pricing if the leaked information is indeed correct.

We will find all of this out officially next month.
