Reports of remote code injection exploit in Dark Souls 3 reportedly went ignored

Arguably one of the more worrying exploits in the digital space was discovered in Dark Souls 3 recently, although since its discovery the exploit has been patched.

The exploit in question is a remote code execution exploit which would allow an attacker to take control of a PC. As reported by The Verge, Twitch streamer The__Grim__Sleeper fell prey to this exploit live on stream. You can see the streamer’s game crash and a text-to-speech voice reciting a message here.

While alarming, it appears as if the person using the exploit was doing so as FromSoftware had not responded to his reports of the exploit.

Thankfully, FromSoftware now appears to be taking the issue seriously and on Sunday it took PvP servers offline for all Dark Souls games on PC.

A community-made mod for Dark Souls 3 – Blue Sentinel – has been used to combat the frequency of cheating in the game and it has been patched to deal with the remote code execution exploit.

While the Dark Souls 3 community believes this vulnerability is only known to a few people, it also recommends making use of Blue Sentinel just in case.

Furthermore, the community has alerted the community manager of Elden Ring and has warned of the severity of the problem according to a Reddit post.

“Only about 4 people currently know how to do this. Two who worked on it, and the two blue sentinel developers. It has not been leaked to our knowledge. It was showcased by one of the people on streamers in more harmless capacities,” reads the post.

The PvP servers still appear to be down as of six hours ago, we recommend keeping tabs on the Dark Souls 3 sub-Reddit for regular updates.
