Unsurprisingly Meta is looking at creating and selling NFTs on Facebook and Instagram

Everyone is getting into NFTs these days, and while we remain on the fence regarding non-fungible tokens, Meta is reportedly going all in.

This as the Financial Times (paywall) reports that Meta is looking at ways for Facebook and Instagram users to make and sell their own NFTs via the company’s social media platforms.

If the title of this story sounds a little sarcastic, it is because Facebook’s recent announcement that it would become Meta and pursue the creation of a persistent digital world via the metaverse fits in nicely with the realm of NFTs.

As such, it should surprise no one that Mark Zuckerberg and co. are looking at adding NFT-based functionality to its platforms.

Meta already has many of the pieces in place, with the aforementioned platforms offering up the user base, reach and marketplace in order to facilitate payments.

Speaking of which, one unnamed source told the Financial Times that the company’s Novi wallet (formerly Calibra in a past life) would assist in that regard.

Add to that a digital marketplace created in a virtual world, aka a metaverse, and things start fitting together nicely. It would also open up a new avenue for Facebook to reach out to brands to create their own NFTs too, which appears to be something that the apparel industry in particular is interested in.

Either way, it looks like Meta is throwing its sizeable hat into the NFT ring, so expect other big tech firms with social media platforms or an interest in augmented reality to follow suit.
