NSFAS hosting a housing summit with R1500 tickets

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has announced a summit focused on sustainable student housing with an outrageous ticket price of R1 500.

The Accommodating Tomorrow Summit is planned to take place between 27th and 29th June 2022 at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in the Free State.

“Change brings about growth and change brings about new hope for a better tomorrow. NSFAS executive committee is getting very excited for the upcoming ‘Accommodating Tomorrow Summit’ held at the CUT in Bloemfontein,” NSFAS writes.

“The summit is a platform for all role players to contribute to discussions related to standards, price and criteria of accommodation for NSFAS-funded students; to ensure future sustainable and safe accommodation,” a description for the event reads.

We’re really not sure how NSFAS can expect proper representation of its role players when students and educators are not known to have an access of disposable income.

That being said maybe these are not the real intended audience for the summit. The official website for the event – which you can find here – lists the following categories for attendees:

  • Current NSFAS Accommodation Service Providers
  • Student Accommodation provider
  • Public University
  • TVET College
  • Investor / Funder
  • Government Entity / Department
  • Other

Looking at that list it is more believable for corporate landlords, government employees and university managers to afford the R1 500 tickets.

That being said we have to worry that people you actually need affordable and sustainable housing are not the same who are splashing out on these expensive tickets, and thus their point of view won’t be represented.

Hopefully NSFAS has taken this into account and, behind closed doors, more people are being let into the event either for free or on cheaper tickets.

On the public facing side, however, there is only the R1 500 tickets for sale on the aforementioned website. Even worse is the fact that the payment needs to be done as an EFT and can’t be simply paid for through something like a credit card.
