Google Chrome Energy Saver feature making its way to all users

  • According to reports, Google Chrome 110 will start making its Energy Saver feature available to all users who update their browser to the latest version.
  • The feature was first announced by Google in December of last year.
  • It works when your device’s battery level drops below 20 percent, but can be customised.

Late last year Google announced the impending arrival of two new features as part of the Chrome 110 iteration of its web browser. Those features were called Memory Saver and Energy Saver, and are aimed at addressing the very real notion that Chrome is a resource hungry web browser.

Now those features are starting to roll out to users, according to a report from Android Police.

The publication explains that it has discovered that the features are now available within the Chrome 110 build, and given the issues surrounding loadshedding at the moment, Energy Saver might be the more useful offering at this stage.

For those unfamiliar with it, Energy Saver it is set to kick in once the battery level of your PC or notebook drops below 20 percent. You’ll receive a notification when it is activated, with a leaf icon appearing in the omnibar in the browser.

You can also head to settings to customise when the Energy Saver is activated. As for how it saves battery life, many of the heavy visual effects you see while normally browsing will decrease, which means website animations and smooth scrolling will take a hit.

If it means a few more minutes of power to work when unplugged, it may be worth it.

For those wondering about Memory Saver, it optimises active tabs and directs resources to them in a bid to help out the RAM in your PC or notebook. How this will improve the overall performance of Chrome remains to be seen, so it will be interesting to gauge whether it indeed makes the browser less resource hungry.

You can check your settings to see if you’re on the most up-to-date version of Chrome. On our end, Energy Saver is already active.
